Birchwood Towers is a 30-story tower complex located at 102-10 66th Street in Forest Hills, Queens, NY. Erected in 1964 and containing 498 co-operative apartments, it is one of three towers in the Birchwood Towers complex that was designed by Samuel Paul and Seymour Jarmul. It is now known as The Toledo, and it and the Kyoto are both 30 stories tall. The third tower, the Bel Air, which is located at 66-36 Yellowstone Boulevard, is 28 stories tall. The building has a two-story lobby with an entrance marquee and a large circular port cohere with a pinched crown over the landscaped driveway. It features lovely curved balconies and amenities that include a large rooftop, seasonally heated swimming club, a playground as well as landscaped lounge areas. Each tower has 24-hour doormen, superintendents, and security.
Mauri Jaffee of Briar House Interiors Ltd. and Robert Rickenback designed the distinctly different lobbies. The Toledo has a Spanish-style balcony with arched windows. The Kyoto has a Japanese-style foot-bridge. The Bel Air has a grand curved and very ornate staircase. There are nine apartments on most floors. The center apartment facing the entrance is a one-bedroom unit that has an 11-foot-long entry foyer that leads to a 28-foot-long living/dining room that opens onto a curved, 31-foot-wide balcony and a 9-foot-long kitchen. Apartment 290 is a three-bedroom unit with an entry foyer that leads to a large living/dining room and an open kitchen and a long, curved balcony. A two-bedroom unit has an entry foyer that leads to an 11-foot-wide dining area and a 20-foot-long living room. A one-bedroom unit has a 7-foot-long entry foyer that leads to an 11-foot-wide dining area next to an enclosed, 8-foot-long kitchen and a 23-foot-long living room.
